Docks: business

A Docker's Life for Me!

Southampton Container terminal - SCT - handles over a million containers every year - and all Britain's container trade with the Far East. Almost all the electrical goods produced in the Far east that you can buy in the shops, will have passed through SCT.

But there are many more businesses on and around the docks, that make up the £1 billion plus that the port brings into the local economy.

Our project team has been to the Container Terminal, to find out how it works… to the Border Inspection Post, where they monitor the health and safety of what's in the containers. They also went on board one of the cruise ships, to talk to the man whose company supplies its food and drink.

“In 2004, trucks were spending two hours here at the Container Terminal - now, it's just 25 minutes. That means we'll have an extra 200 thousand containers through the port in 2007.”
