Southampton's been a port since Roman times - it traded wine with France in the Middle Ages and there are Southampton merchants' houses in Dubrovnik, Croatia. But the port didn't really take off till the early 19th century. Why was this? Our team set out to trace the history of the modern port, from the first open docks down by the present Ocean Village, to the huge container terminal in the Western Docks, which were built against all the financial odds during the pre-war Great Depression. |
