Shipbuilding

A New Dawn for Portsmouth

It's 40 years since a brand new Naval vessel was launched in Portsmouth - but on June 14th 2006, HMS Clyde was hauled out of her construction shed in the Royal Navy Dockyard and floated into the fitting dock. It was a proud day for the city and for VT Shipbuilding, who moved there from Southampton into a brand new facility three years ago.

Our team has been to see HMS Clyde, and to talk to the men who built her to find out why this launch is so important and what the future is for shipbuilding in Hampshire and the rest of the UK…

“HMS Clyde's important because there's world-wide interest in this ship - and we're getting paid a lot of money for it, so there's lots of benefit for the local community.”
