Survey Results

We surveyed over 200 students from our school, to find out what they thought about under-age sex and about drinking. We did this by putting together a questionnaire, which was filled in anonymously and completely voluntarily.

We asked them 14 questions about their drinking habits and experiences; and a further 18 about their sex lives, and whether this was affected by drinking.

Birkbeck students analyse the survey results.

Some of our main findings are:

  1. 90% of 12 - 16-year olds have drunk alcohol.
  2. 60% of 12-13 year old drinkers, rising to 90% of 16-year olds, have been drunk; around a third of these have been involved with the Police as a result.
  3. Beer is most popular with boys; girls prefer spirits and alcopops, and 1 in 3 drink these to excess.
  4. Roughly 1 in 3 of respondents aged 14-16 have had sexual intercourse: slightly more boys than girls.
  5. 1 in 6 12-13 year olds say they've had sexual intercourse.
  6. 1 in 5 girls admit they've had sex without their full consent, with up to 50% saying they now regret having had sex.
  7. Up to 50% of girls aged 12 - 15 say having sex was linked to drinking alcohol first.
  8. By the time they're 16 - and sex is legal - nearly 2 / 3 of respondents have already had sexual intercourse.
